Who The Breather Fit is for
The Breather Fit is built for healthy people who train for performance, fitness or sport. Its resistance range is higher than The Breather's.
It should suit you if
- You play, train or race in any sport, whether you are new to it or competing at the top
- You run out of breath before your legs run out of strength
- You are a singer or wind player who wants to work on breath support
- You want breathing training that slots into a routine you already have
Choose The Breather if
- You have a heart, lung or neurological condition
- You are getting your breathing strength back after being unwell
- It was recommended to you by a health professional
If a doctor has ever diagnosed a problem with your lungs or heart, see them before you use it.
How The Breather Fit works
The Breather Fit is a hand-held breathing device for training. Every breath in and out passes through it, and you set how much resistance there is. Your breathing muscles have to work harder against it than they do normally. That is respiratory muscle training.
In a hard session, tired breathing muscles can be what slows you down. The Breather Fit gives you a way to train them directly, apart from the rest of your workout.
New users begin with each dial on 1 and build from there. The two dials are not linked, so you might have the in breath on 3 and the out breath on 2.

Dial for breathing in
- 1
- 2
- 3
- 4
- 5
- 6
Six levels. The higher the number, the harder your diaphragm and other inhaling muscles work.
Dial for breathing out
- 1
- 2
- 3
- 4
- 5
Five levels. Turning it up makes your abdominals and other exhaling muscles work harder.
Who trains this way
People who compete in endurance sports, team sports and strength sports use respiratory muscle training, and so do singers and musicians who depend on breath control. Researchers have studied what it does to breathlessness during exercise and to the time athletes can go before fatigue sets in.
It sits on top of the training you already do. It is not a substitute for it.
The evidence
You can read about the research in these articles.
A Breather Fit session, step by step
- Start seated. Back straight, shoulders easy, both dials on 1.
- Let all your air out, then put the mouthpiece between your lips and close them around it.
- Pull the air in deeply and with force. Make it last 2 to 3 seconds.
- Take a short pause, then blow out with force for the same 2 to 3 seconds. Do not let your cheeks balloon.
- That makes one breath. Do 10 for a set.
For the complete protocol, a checklist to use before you start and a journal to print for each day, go to our training page.
Sets and sessions
- 10 breaths to a set
- 2 sets to a session
- 2 sessions a day, morning first and evening second
- 6 days each week
Around once a week, test yourself on the next number up. You may need two to four weeks of steady sessions before you feel it working.

How to wash it
- Detach the mouthpiece first. Hand wash it in lightly soapy warm water (ordinary dishwashing liquid is fine) and rinse.
- Give it a shake and leave it on a clean surface until it has dried in the air. Keep it out of direct sunlight while it dries.
- For a more thorough clean, mix 3 parts warm water with 1 part vinegar and leave it in for 5 to 15 minutes.
- It should not go in a dishwasher.
- Do not lend it to anyone. Every user has to have their own device.

What New Zealand buyers ask about The Breather Fit
Can I get The Breather Fit sent to New Zealand?
Yes, we post it from Australia. The delivery fee in AUD is $27.50 (1 to 3 items), $37.50 (4 to 10 items) or $49.50 (11 to 20 items).
Which currency do I pay in?
Australian dollars. PayPal or your card provider converts it to New Zealand dollars for you when you pay.
How do I choose between The Breather Fit and The Breather?
Go by what you want it for. For sport and fitness, choose The Breather Fit, which has the higher resistance range. To manage a health condition or recover lost breathing strength, choose The Breather. You get six inhale settings and five exhale settings with either one.
Do I need to be a serious athlete to use it?
No. People use it at all levels, from beginners to elite athletes. Everyone starts on setting 1 and moves up as they get stronger.
What does a normal training day look like?
Two sessions, one in the morning and one in the evening. Each one has 20 breaths, split into two sets of 10. You do this six days a week.
How many weeks until I notice results?
It can be two to four weeks before you notice, provided you train regularly.
Can I use it in place of a training session?
No. It is an extra that trains your breathing muscles on their own. Keep doing your normal training.
Can a team share one device?
No. A Breather Fit is for a single user, so each player needs to have one.
What if I feel light-headed while using it?
That can happen in the early sessions and normally eases. If it carries on, stop training and check with a health professional.
Always read the label and follow the directions for use. What you read here is general information, not medical advice for you personally. Anyone with a health condition should check with their GP or physio before starting respiratory muscle training.
